Learning to Drive Independent Driving

Posted by blueschoolofmotoring on October 24, 2010

Blue School of Motoring driving school can tailor a driving course that will help you cope with all of the following. Your driving instructor can help you with this
The independent driving or riding section will be included in the following practical driving tests:

  • car
  • motorcycle module two
  • large goods vehicle (LGV)
  • passenger carrying vehicle (PCV) tests
  • approved driving instructor (ADI) driving ability (sometimes called part two)
  • taxi

Independent driving explained

Watch a video about independent driving Video Click Here

The practical driving test will include approximately 10 minutes of independent driving.

During your test you’ll have to drive independently by either following:

  • traffic signs
  • a series of directions
  • a combination of both

To help you understand where you are going when following verbal directions, the examiner will show you a diagram. It doesn’t matter if you don’t remember every direction, or if you go the wrong way – that can happen to the most experienced drivers. Independent driving is not a test of your orientation and navigation skills. Driving independently means making your own decisions – this includes deciding when it’s safe and appropriate to ask for confirmation about where you’re going.

The independent driving route

If you ask for a reminder of the directions, the examiner will confirm them to you. If you go off the independent driving route it won’t affect the result of your test unless you commit a driving fault. If you go off the route or take a wrong turning, the examiner will help you to get back on the route and continue with the independent driving. If there are poor or obscured traffic signs, the examiner will give you directions until you can see the next traffic sign – you won’t need to have a detailed knowledge of the area. You can’t use a sat nav for independent driving as it gives you turn-by-turn prompts. Independent driving tests how you make your own decisions.

Learning to drive in the Cove area is a great experience with a Blue School of Motoring Ltd instructor. The local area roads can be a demanding experience for the novice driver, especially with so much work being carried out in the Cove area. With so many people arriving to shop in the town centre, there are always plenty of hazards to contend with, especially the busy High Street and traffic to the M3 or the M25. Learn to drive in Cove with the experts.

Take extra care on country roads and reduce your speed at approaches to bends, which can be sharper than they appear, and at junctions and turnings, which may be partially hidden. Be prepared for pedestrians, horse riders, cyclists, slow-moving farm vehicles or mud on the road surface. Make sure you can stop within the distance you can see to be clear. You should also reduce your speed where country roads enter villages.

Single-track roads. These are only wide enough for one vehicle. They may have special passing places. If you see a vehicle coming towards you, or the driver behind wants to overtake, pull into a passing place on your left, or wait opposite a passing place on your right. Give way to vehicles coming uphill whenever you can. If necessary, reverse until you reach a passing place to let the other vehicle pass. Slow down when passing pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.

Blue School of Motoring Ltd can offer training courses for prospective trainees who live in the Cove area. Learn to teach people to drive in the Cove area, with Blue School of Motoring Ltd. Learn to reverse around a corner safely or do an emergency stop, we can help you pass your driving test.

Roundabouts

On approaching a roundabout take notice and act on all the information available to you, including traffic signs, traffic lights and lane markings which direct you into the correct lane. You should

  • use Mirrors – Signal – Manoeuvre at all stages
  • decide as early as possible which exit you need to take
    • give an appropriate signal (see Rule 186). Time your signals so as not to confuse other road users
    • get into the correct lane
    • adjust your speed and position to fit in with traffic conditions
    • be aware of the speed and position of all the road users around you

When reaching the roundabout you should

  • give priority to traffic approaching from your right, unless directed otherwise    by signs, road markings or traffic lights
  • check whether road markings allow you to enter the roundabout without giving way. If so, proceed, but still look to the right before joining
  • watch out for all other road users already on the roundabout; be aware they may not be signalling correctly or at all
  • · look forward before moving off to make sure traffic in front has moved off

Driving in adverse weather conditions, Arborfield

You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves.

Wet weather. In wet weather, stopping distances will be at least double those required for stopping on dry roads. This is because your tyres have less grip on the road. In wet weather

  • you should keep well back from the vehicle in front. This will increase your ability to see and plan ahead
  • if the steering becomes unresponsive, it probably means that water is preventing the tyres from gripping the road. Ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually
  • the rain and spray from vehicles may make it difficult to see and be seen
  • be aware of the dangers of spilt diesel that will make the surface very slippery (see ‘Vehicle maintenance, safety and security’)
  • take extra care around pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and horse riders

Icy and snowy weather

In winter check the local weather forecast for warnings of icy or snowy weather. DO NOT drive in these conditions unless your journey is essential. If it is, take great care and allow more time for your journey. Take an emergency kit of de-icer and ice scraper, torch, warm clothing and boots, first aid kit, jump leads and a shovel, together with a warm drink and emergency food in case you get stuck or your vehicle breaks down.

Before you set off

  • you MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows
  • you MUST ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible
  • make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly
  • remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users
  • check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather are predicted
